What Makes A Military Homecoming Themed Romance? Well…
Before I begin, I’d like to thank Brighton for giving me a chance to chat about STARTING FROM SCRATCH, a military homecoming-themed holiday novella. It’s one half of Carina Press’s GIFTS OF HONOR, with the other half comprised of Rebecca Crowley’s wonderful story, HERO’S HOMECOMING. Happy holidays, everyone! ^_^
Carina Press wanted to do a holiday collection of romantic stories that had a military homecoming as a theme, which sounded awesome. Before I tackled this project, I made a list of what I thought had to be mandatory in this story to make sure it covered the criteria.
Holiday: Christmas has always been my favorite time of year, so this one was easy! There’s an almost magical quality to this time of year, making it possible to believe there’s a miracle hiding beneath every bow, so I had to throw in an unexpected gift or two. Then, to further sketch out the holiday theme, I also threw in some tree decorating—and shenanigans going on under the tree—gift-giving, and the baking traditional Christmas cookies. Lots and lots of cookies. If you’re not craving cookies at the end of this novella, I didn’t do my job right. ;)
Military Homecoming: This was trickier. I’ve had an idea lurking in the back of my head about a soldier who’d suffered a traumatic brain injury, a story loosely based on a married couple I’ve known for years. Since their real-life story wound up in a happily-ever-after, I decided that now was the time to finally let that idea come out of the shadows and take center stage. The main thing I had to tackle was the homecoming itself. Reintegration of a solider is something every military family has to deal with, so I interviewed several close friends who were kind enough to open up about how they adjusted to make room for their returning hero. Ultimately, that conversation led to…
Romance: Sully and Lucy, the hero and heroine of STARTING FROM SCRATCH, are now divorced and living in the same town. Sully knows he was once married to Lucy, but only because he’s been told this information. Thanks to the injury he sustained, she’s been deleted from his memory, but after a year of recovery Sully is ready to try and get his life back. Lucy, still in love with him but aware that their marriage hadn’t been in the best shape before he was wounded, is trying to keep her emotional distance. But she can’t deny the attraction is still as strong as ever between them, even though he views her as a beautiful stranger.

Christmas is the perfect time to start from scratch
Lieutenant Sully Jax saved his unit during an IED attack, but he couldn't save his marriage. He can't even remember it. Recovered from his injuries, he's come home to the family and friends he knows—and an ex-wife who's a stranger to him.
Lucy Crabtree was heartbroken last Christmas when Sully announced his plan to go on one last tour of duty, and devastated when he asked for a divorce after he awoke in the hospital with no memory of her. She's finally moving on from her hurt and from losing the man she loved more than anything, and her cookie-baking business is taking off just in time for the holidays. But now Sully's back, and she can't deny she still loves him. But how can she trust her heart to someone who breaks it every time she sees him?
Sully might not remember Lucy, but something inside won't let her go. With every bite of her cookies, he finds a new love for Lucy, and he soon realizes he wants to rebuild his life with her by his side.
