Of all the books I've written about this month there are none that I love more than the In Death series. For those of you that don't know, J.D. Robb is the pseudonym of Nora Roberts (who I wrote about yesterday) and the In Death series is far in the future ( in the late 2050s) and follows Lieutenant Eve Dallas and gazillionaire Roarke.
The series begins with the case that brings Eve and Roarke together and follows them through marriage, troubles and discoveries of their past. Both characters had very trouble childhoods but have risen above their circumstances- Eve in becoming a cop and Roarke on the not-so-legal side.
In Portrait In Death we find out the truth in Roarke's parentage right in the middle of a difficult case for Eve. He doesn't handle the truth very well but the scenes where he is in Ireland and when Eve joins him are some of the best I've ever read.
This is the first In Death novel that doesn't have "in death" in the title. A lot of readers thought it was the end of the series but it marks the significance of Eve finally coming face to face with her mother. She had confronted the memories of Dallas many books ago but being in the city where she began again and seeing mother for the first time in decades was series groundbreaking.
But a lot of the series isn't all so serious and heartbreaking, it's one of the funniest I've ever read. The banter between all the characters will make you laugh out loud and I seriously highlight quotes on my Kindle just so I can go back and read them later when I'm feeling bummy.
Most of all, Roarke is my favorite book character of all time. He has a shady past and hasn't always walked on the right side of the law but he is a loyal and loving man. He takes care of his own and when he loves, he loves fiercely. Poor Eve doesn't know what to do with the diamond that he gives to her early on in their relationship or with the attention that he gives to the little things.
Who is your favorite character in the In Death series?
