Fan Fiction

Fan fiction.  Have you ever heard of it?  It's out there.  A lot of it.  What is fan fiction though?  It's when everyday people like you and me decide that they want a little more of our favorite characters and write their own story with those characters.  I'll warn you right now it can be addicting.

I'll also admit that I do read it.  Sometimes I can't let my favorite characters go and want to read more.  I'll also tell you that some of the BEST authors I've ever read are in the fan fiction world.  Some of these people should be selling book numbers like Nora Roberts they are that good.  Did you know that Fifty Shades of Grey started out as Twilight fan fiction?  It was originally called "Master of the Universe" and I have a pdf of the original story with Edward and Bella instead of Christian and Ana.

There are two main sites that I read from...

Fanfiction.net
 and

The Writer's Coffee Shop Library.

Both sites have their goods and bads.  FF.net has authors that stellar all the way down to ones that you wonder if they own a dictionary or if their spell check is malfunctioning.  I've cringed a few times when I've read a few stories.  Ok, a lot.  TWCSL has a little higher quality of writers and they do have a in-house publishing company (they are the original publishers of Fifty Shades) so you can order/download books from their store.

It's a guilty pleasure but a darn good one.  The biggest downfall and risk with reading fan fiction is if the writer stops writing and it happens a lot.  When you are reading an actual book you know there is a beginning, middle and end and you will get there eventually.  In fan fiction sometimes authors have a lot of their story prewritten and will post updates frequently but sometimes you end up waiting for weeks (or months) for an update.  The updates can be anywhere from a few hundred words (why bother?) to more than 14,000+ words.  It's a big risk but also one of the best payoffs.  I'm reading several stories at the moment that are a work in progress but are so wonderful that it feels like an honor to read the authors words.

Do you read fan fiction?  What are your  favorite communities?  I love finding new authors and stories so let me know and I'd be more than happy to share some of my favorites with you too.
